GCSE, IB or A Level French in Dubai: A Parent's Guide to Which Exam Your Child Is Actually Taking

One of the first questions I ask every new parent is simple: which curriculum does your child's school follow? The answer changes everything, how I teach, what I prioritize, and how quickly we can expect progress.

Dubai's international school landscape is different, with British, IB and mixed curricula operating across the emirate. Here's a clear breakdown of what GCSE, IB and A Level French actually mean in UAE schools.

GCSE French in Dubai

GCSE French is usually taken in Years 10 and 11 at British curriculum schools such as Repton Dubai, Kings' School Al Barsha and JESS. Students are examined across four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking, and the final grade runs from 1 to 9. A solid GCSE French grade is often required for students who want to continue to IB French or A Level French later on.

IB French (MYP and Diploma) in Dubai

The International Baccalaureate offers French through the MYP (ages roughly 11–16) and the IB Diploma (Years 12 and 13). MYP French focuses on communication, real-world contexts and inquiry-based learning. At Diploma level, French is offered at Standard Level and Higher Level, and is widely recognized as a demanding, well-respected school qualification. In Dubai, schools such as GEMS, Dubai International Academy and DESC follow the IB pathway.

A Level French in Dubai

A Level French is offered in some British curriculum sixth forms as an alternative to the IB Diploma. It is a two-year qualification that asks students to develop strong independent writing, critical thinking and analytical skills in French, often through the study of films, literature and contemporary issues.

Why this matters for tutoring

Each of these exams has different vocabulary expectations, text types, topics and exam formats. Generic French tuition that ignores your child's exact curriculum and exam board will always underperform.

Every Dubai school does it differently, and knowing exactly which framework your child is working within makes all the difference to how they're taught. Send me a WhatsApp on +971 50 448 0350 — we'll figure it out together in five minutes.
